Elect Respect Campaign
2025-Ongoing
Elect Respect is a Canada-wide campaign launched in 2025 to address rising toxicity, harassment, and incivility in public life by encouraging elected officials and citizens to lead by example through a shared commitment to respectful conduct.
Originating from discussions among members of H.E.R. Halton—a network of female elected leaders across municipal, provincial, and federal offices—the campaign was conceived as a simple idea by Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward; a proactive response to the increasing hostility faced by public officials. Recognizing that much of the broader environment is beyond direct control, the group identified an opportunity to set a higher standard through a public-facing pledge rooted in accountability, leadership, and respect. As Mayor Meed Ward’s Media & Digital Communications Specialist, I was responsible for translating this initial concept into a fully realized campaign.
Working largely independently, though with input from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s (AMO) Healthy Democracy Project and the Mayor’s Office team, I developed the campaign’s name, “Elect Respect,” and led all creative and digital execution, including brand identity, website design and development, and the production of all supporting materials and collateral. The campaign was anchored by a dual-purpose pledge for both elected officials and the public, alongside a formal resolution designed for adoption by municipal councils and corporate boards. The broader strategy focused on accessibility, clarity, and neutrality—ensuring the campaign could resonate across political affiliations and jurisdictions while maintaining a consistent and professional visual and messaging system.
Beyond design, I led all media relations and outreach efforts, securing extensive coverage across national news, radio, and podcast platforms, and coordinating high-profile campaign moments, including press conferences and a provincial advocacy event at Queen’s Park with representation from all major political parties. Launched in June 2025 following several months of development, the campaign quickly gained traction and continues to grow, with more than 250 elected officials, 60+ municipalities, 16+ boards, and over 550 citizens signing on to the pledge, including adoption by major Canadian cities such as Toronto and Vancouver. For this effort, Mayor Marianne Meed Ward was awarded the 2025 Mayor of the Year Award by a unanimous decision by the Municipal World editorial board.
Through a combination of strategic messaging, accessible design, and targeted outreach, the campaign has evolved into a nationally recognized movement, demonstrating how a clear, values-driven approach can influence behaviour, build consensus across political divides, and elevate standards in public discourse.
